Summer STEAM Workshops 2023

RSVP for: Summer STEAM Workshops 2023

Throughout July come to have fun and learn some ideas of how to integrate technology into your lesson plans.

  • July 5 (12 to 1 pm – Zoom) Math & Literacy: With peer mentors Tamara and Ariane. Early numeracy and literacy skills lay the foundation for much of children’s future learning. Come join our session as we share creative ways to integrate reading and writing.
  • July 7 (12 to 1 pm – in person) ChatGPT: Geering Up ProD (UBC) with Reid Patterson (Description soon)
  • July 10 (12 to 1 pm – Zoom) Gaming & Storytelling: With peer mentors Tamara and Ariane. Allow students to apply their understanding of story elements (characters, setting, problem, etc.) in a way that can better meet their interests and needs. Through the integration of coding with storytelling, using platforms such as MakeCode, Scratch, or Twine, students can program their stories to come to life, using text or their voice to help tell the story! This is not a technical workshop on how to code (due to time constraints), however, examples, resources, and videos will be provided to help get you started.
  • July 12 (4 to 5 pm – Zoom) Supporting Language Learners using Tech Tools: With peer mentors Tamara and Ariane. Find out how to support English language learners in your classroom using a variety of web and Chrome extensions. Tools will be introduced that will enable language learners to become more independent and less reliant on teacher assistance. Built-in language accessibility tools will be demonstrated in programs you’re already using every day, for example, Wikipedia, Google Docs & PowerPoint. Come prepared to download, explore, and practice using these various language tools!
  • July 17 (12 to 1 pm – Zoom) Resource Sharing: With peer mentors Tamara and Ariane. Subject specific websites, tools & apps. Curriculum support documents & websites (subjects & core competencies). Indigenous lessons, activities & resources.
  • July 25 (12 to 1pm – In Person Scarfe 1007) MicroBits across the Curriculum:
Join Tess Sutherland & Olivia Stanton from Pinnguaq (pinnguaq.com) in a hands-on workshop on how to create relevant Microbit activities that connect meaningfully to your curriculum! Whether you want to merge electronics and code with art, science, math, language or anything else, we invite you to learn from the play-based approach we take to developing lesson plans and activities that are localized to your unique learning community.
  • July 26 (12 to 1 pm – Zoom) Create with New Coding Tools: With Pinnguaq. Get creative with coding with new coding tools. These coding tools are appropriate for grades 3 and up, including secondary students. Explore the tools that are available and how best to tap into students’ creativity and curiosity to build exciting coding projects!
  • August 3 (4 to 5 pm) Planning & Choosing activities: With peer mentors Ariane and Tamara. One of the biggest challenges of being a teacher is planning meaningful activities for your learning goals. In this session, ideas and tools will be shared on how to plan and choose activities to support learnings with different backgrounds.
  • August 16 (12 to 1 pm) Assessment & Digital Assessment: With peer mentors Ariane and Tamara. A variety of assessment methods and tools will be shared. Summative and formative assessments will be discussed and how to vary (or modify) our evaluations to ensure we are meeting all students’ needs. Ideas will also be provided on how to integrate digital assessments into your lesson planning.
  • August 21 (12 to 1 pm) Classroom Relationship/Management: With peer mentors Tamara and Ariane. Building relationships in a trusting environment (where students are given a voice and choice over their learning) is key to compliance. In this session ideas and tools will be shared on how to establish a community-centered, inclusive classroom environment. From mission statements to class meetings, join us to find out how to empower your students in taking control (and therefore responsibility) of their classroom and their learning.
