Welcome to a New Year: software, services and more!

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all of the incoming #UBCBEd2021 teacher candidates (TCs) to the Faculty of Education at UBC and let you know about some valuable digi-tech related opportunities you have as a UBC student. I’ll make this brief with bullet points. Please touch base if you have any questions and be sure to visit the resources section of this website to learn more about individual tech tools, strategies and approaches to learning.

  • Software licensing for students through UBC IT – includes Office 365, VideoScribe, Camtasia, Windows 10 Education (learn more about Videoscribe and Camtasia in the resources section of this website… Click Ask a Question to seek individual help.
  • Hardware loans: Chapman Learning Commons has a full suite of loans from 360 cameras, webcams, chargers, dongles, laptops, mics and office supplies. Our own Education Library also has a few chargers and dongles on loan – ask at the desk!
  • Student IT support is available through UBC IT. TCs may also meet with Eric Lee in the Faculty of Ed (Eric is a work learn student with teacher education and is not only a wealth of information but a patient teacher!) – click the ask a question tab or email scarfe.sandbox@ubc.ca
  • WordPress / UBCblogs drop in support is available (You’ll also find some WordPress tutorials a student of mine created to help TCs get started on blogging and can click the Ask A Question link above to get one on one help; Eric has some strong WordPress skills!)
  • Scarfe Flexible Learning Studios are student forward spaces that are also bookable. At any one time, one of the rooms will pretty well always be open and free for students to use. These are intended as group work and learning spaces (they aren’t quiet study rooms). Scarfe 1007 will host the Scarfe Sandbox (Yvonne’s) consults and workshops on Digital Tech Integration, Learning Design and pedagogical approaches.

MONDAYS this fall: Scarfe Tea Party – bring a mug and drop by between 4 – 5:30 pm for tea and cookies (yes, homemade!). We’ll snack while we consult on planning, research and resources. RSVP
TUESDAYS this fall: Create, Make, Innovate – hands-on interdisciplinary learning ‘sparks’ – drop by the foyer table, say hello to Scott and any visiting host faculty or staff – play with something, ask questions, share ideas!

WEDNESDAYS this fall: Scarfe Sandbox Drop-in Support and Workshops to support varied approaches to learning and planning (hosted by Yvonne, Eric & guests)

Professional Learning: Visit the bulletin board outside of the TEO for event information and opportunities open to TCs
